Law Enforcement
SNA in partnership with the Flagstaff Police Department, SSWSSC and partners, coordinated efforts with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies and residents to combat drug, violent crime and gang-related crime in the Sunnyside neighborhood, and increase efforts to increase prosecution of crimes committed with a firearm. These efforts directly impact all neighborhood residents (approximately 5,000) that live in the Sunnyside neighborhood area).
Neighborhood Watch
The purpose of SNAs Community Policing/Block Captains (Neighborhood Watch) Program is to build and strengthen partnerships between neighbors, crime prevention services, the Flagstaff Police Department, Fire Department, City government and SNA. Overall Community-oriented Policing goals are (a) an increased number of residents involved in crime prevention activities and (b) increased opportunities for building the capacity of the residents. Currently there are 15 residents that are actively participating in the neighborhoods Block Captains program. Get Involved!
Neighborhood Revitalization & Restoration
The purpose of SNAs Neighborhood Revitalization & Restoration Program (NR&R) is to assist with and ensure sustainable resident-minded economic development (including resident skills training) and neighborhood restoration (including beautification, infrastructure and housing) opportunities for neighborhood residents. The focus is on increasing resident motivation and education to build pride in the community through training and activities in an effort to not only improve the visual aspects of the community, but to focus on building the capacity of resident by providing them with the tools to counteract stereotyping of the community. NR&R activities include the Wood-4-Warmth Program, the Legacy of Blessings Program and the development of a neighborhood Revitalization & Restoration plan to be submitted to HUD.

A component of the neighborhoods Weed & Seed Strategy, PIT aims at implementing core principles that will create and sustain the health, wellness and economic feasibility of the Sunnyside neighborhood residents in addition to offering greater opportunity to the neighborhood youth. This process involves residents, schools, law enforcement, government, businesses, and many other community agencies. Overall Prevention/Intervention/Treatment Strategy Goals are (a) increased sense of safety in the community and (b) improved healthful practices to support the wellness of all residents. This includes the Sunnyside I. A.M. Youth! group. Additionally, SNA sponsors two (2) neighborhood Safe Havens (Killip Elementary School and the Flagstaff Recreation Center) with before/after-school programs/services.
Neighborhood/Community Celebrations/events
             (N/CC Events)
The purpose of SNAs Neighborhood/Community Celebrations is to provide opportunities for residents to mix and chat with neighbors get involved with their community and participate in family activities. Such N/CC Events include: the Fourth Street Cinco de Mayo Fiesta, the Sunnyside Summer Celebration Festival, the La Joya de Sunnyside Fiesta of Independence, the Sunnyside Youth Candlelight Vigil, the Youth Hip Hop for Hunger Program, the Sunnyside Holiday Craft Bazaar and the Sunnyside Toys for Tots/Christmas Project). Over 24,540 individuals attended these types of neighborhood-sponsored events in 2005.
Genisis-X Program
Community Reentry Program Proves Successful!
 
Genisis-X, which stands for Growth & Empowerment Neighborhood Initiative for Strengthening the Individual Success of eX-felons, is a joint Sunnyside and Southside neighborhood re-entry initiative that helps people on probation or parole to build a new life.  Genisis-X works with participants and their probation or parole officers to provide social services to people returning to Flagstaff`s Sunnyside and Southside neighborhoods, which are designated U.S. Department of Justice 'Weed & Seed' sites.
 
After a year in operation, Genisis-X has successfully served more than three times as many clients as had been planned!   Sixty-five (65) clients who are on probation from jail or parole from prison have found employment, housing, information about continuing education, and other emergency services thanks to Genisis-X.  Employment success rate has been high - 64% of those looking for work are now employed! The types of jobs obtained include construction, cook, medical data coding, motel housecleaning, motel front office, newspaper mailroom/ pressroom, restaurant maintenance, restaurant server, steel fabrication, telemarketing and warehouse management, among other jobs.
 
Genisis-X is a crime-prevention part of the Flagstaff Weed & Seed strategy for the Sunnyside and Southside neighborhoods.  Funded by the U.S. Department of Justice, this re-entry initiative offers social services for people on probation or parole who are returning to the Sunnyside and Southside neighborhoods.  
 
Genisis-X partners include Southside Community Association, Sunnyside Neighborhood Association, Coconino County Adult Probation, Arizona Department of Corrections, Flagstaff Police Department, City of Flagstaff, Coconino County Sheriff`s Office, and Coconino County Jail.
 
One Program Manager - Jennifer Dufresne - staffs the program and offers case management to eligible participants to help with employment options, housing options, education options and other emergency services (clothing, food, furniture, counseling, etc.).  Mrs. Dufresne meets with the client during an assessment to identify steps to find employment and obtain social services to achieve self-sufficiency.
